Mr Big Word
Mr Big Word, the priest said aloud to the congregation. A few looked at each other with questioning faces. The priest smiled towards the small baby he held dangling by its feet. He dipped its head back into the holy water. With a capital B for big and a capital W for word, he told the crowd. The baby began to murmur and cry gently, with its arms waving. The mother and father rushed over and carefully lifted their child by the back of the head and body, taking their child from the priest while saying, thank you praise god. Our child of God has been sanctified, the priest said, let us pray. People’s heads bowed down and many along the church pews began reciting their prayer. The quiet unison of words produced a startling effect on the young child, who stopped crying and watched with widened eyes as it was rocked gently by its father. We’re here today to welcome our newest member into our community, Mr Big Word, to a common unity with his holiness, said the priest. The mother and father looked at the priest, who smiled back towards them. The mother’s mouth dropped. He’s called Darren, the baby’s father said. The priest turned to the new parents and addressed a slight twist in his collar. He nodded and said, I understand. He smiled and gestured with his hands a kind of acknowledgement towards the father. Dear lord, he said as he faced his community again, take this child of yours, Mr Big Word, under your wing and he will serve you as we serve you for the love that you share unto us, amen. Amen, said the congregation.
